What is the Prenatal Checkup Subsidy?

When a spouse of a new immigrant arrives in Taiwan, if they are not yet eligible for National Health Insurance (NHI) (usually requiring a residency period of 6 months), prenatal checkup costs can be a burden. To protect the health of mothers and children, the government provides a "Prenatal Checkup Subsidy" to ensure comprehensive medical care during the period of non-insurance.

Subsidy Items (Based on NHI Standards)

  • 14 free prenatal checkups.

  • 2 ultrasound examinations.

  • Prenatal beta-streptococcal screening.

  • Routine testing (blood type, syphilis, HIV, etc.).

  • Prenatal genetic diagnosis subsidy (subject to availability).

Application Methods

  1. Direct Medical Visit: Present your valid "Residence Permit" at a government-cooperative medical institution (hospital or clinic).

  2. Proactive Disclosure: Inform the counter that you are a "pregnant new immigrant without NHI coverage," and the hospital will apply for the subsidy from the Health Bureau on your behalf.

  3. Out-of-pocket expenses: Usually, only a registration fee is required on-site; all examinations are free.

Important Reminder

  • Even without a National Health Insurance card, you can enjoy this benefit as long as you have a residence permit.

  • If you are already enrolled in National Health Insurance, you will revert to the National Health Insurance system and will not be eligible for this subsidy program.

  • It is recommended to start prenatal checkups as soon as possible after confirming pregnancy to monitor fetal development.

FAQ

Q: I haven't received my health insurance card yet. Will I have to pay for prenatal checkups at the hospital?

A: As long as you present a valid residence permit to a participating medical institution and inform them that you are a "new resident who has not been enrolled in health insurance," you can enjoy the same prenatal check-up subsidies as those covered by health insurance, without having to pay for the check-up (excluding registration fees).

Q: Do I need to apply for government approval before receiving prenatal checkup subsidies?

A: No need. Go directly to the prenatal checkup hospital, and the hospital will apply for the fees from the Health Bureau or Health Promotion Administration on your behalf. The pregnant woman only needs to show her identity document on site.

Q: Can new residents who have already enrolled in health insurance still receive this subsidy?

A: If you are already enrolled in National Health Insurance, the prenatal checkup fees will be directly paid by National Health Insurance. This plan is a special support measure designed for new immigrants who are in the "uninsured gap period".
