What is the Prenatal Checkup Subsidy?
When a spouse of a new immigrant arrives in Taiwan, if they are not yet eligible for National Health Insurance (NHI) (usually requiring a residency period of 6 months), prenatal checkup costs can be a burden. To protect the health of mothers and children, the government provides a "Prenatal Checkup Subsidy" to ensure comprehensive medical care during the period of non-insurance.
Subsidy Items (Based on NHI Standards)
14 free prenatal checkups.
2 ultrasound examinations.
Prenatal beta-streptococcal screening.
Routine testing (blood type, syphilis, HIV, etc.).
Prenatal genetic diagnosis subsidy (subject to availability).
Application Methods
Direct Medical Visit: Present your valid "Residence Permit" at a government-cooperative medical institution (hospital or clinic).
Proactive Disclosure: Inform the counter that you are a "pregnant new immigrant without NHI coverage," and the hospital will apply for the subsidy from the Health Bureau on your behalf.
Out-of-pocket expenses: Usually, only a registration fee is required on-site; all examinations are free.
Important Reminder
Even without a National Health Insurance card, you can enjoy this benefit as long as you have a residence permit.
If you are already enrolled in National Health Insurance, you will revert to the National Health Insurance system and will not be eligible for this subsidy program.
It is recommended to start prenatal checkups as soon as possible after confirming pregnancy to monitor fetal development.
