What is a Rent Subsidy?
A rent subsidy is a housing allowance provided by the Land Management Agency of the Ministry of the Interior to help families without their own home who need to rent to alleviate their rent burden. Eligible applicants can receive a maximum subsidy of NT$6,000 per month, directly deposited into their account.
Can foreigners apply? (read this first)
Yes — in most cases. The expanded rent subsidy was broadened in 2022 to cover a wide range of renters, and foreign household members are counted using the unified ID number (統一證號) on their ARC. New immigrants (the foreign spouse of a Taiwanese national) can apply and also receive a bonus multiplier (1.2× or more). If you hold a work or student ARC, confirm your exact case on the official eligibility checker before assuming — see the application link below. When in doubt, call 1990 (24h, Chinese/English/Japanese).
Who can apply?
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
No Homeownership: Neither the applicant nor their spouse, nor any immediate family members living with them, own any property.
Legal Rental: The rental agreement must be legal, and the landlord must have completed rental income declaration.
Income Limits: The family's annual income must be below a certain threshold (adjusted according to region and population).
Actual Residence: The applicant's household registration must be transferred to the rented address, or proof of actual residence must be provided.
How is the Amount Calculated?
The subsidy amount varies depending on the city/county where the rental property is located and the family size:
| Region | Monthly Subsidy Cap |
|---|---|
| Taipei City | NT$6,000 |
| New Taipei City, Taoyuan City | NT$5,000 |
| Other Municipalities | NT$4,000 |
| General Counties/Cities | NT$2,000~3,500 |
Calculation Example:
Renting in Taipei City, monthly rent NT$20,000 → Monthly subsidy NT$6,000
Renting in Taichung City, monthly rent NT$12,000 → Monthly subsidy NT$4,000
Application Process
Prepare the following documents: ID card, rental agreement (must be notarized or declared), bankbook cover, household registration certificate

Applicants will not pass the eligibility review if the landlord fails to declare rental income.
Those already renting government-subsidized housing are not eligible to apply for this subsidy again.
